Simply... Mau
Tuesday, 07 July, 2015,
Mau is a cat you have never seen in an adoption ad. Why? It's simple: because Mau, the soul of our shelter, is not looking for a home or for a master; because he IS the master of the place, its guardian; because he was there before us and he has never left us - for better or for worse...

All those who know him love him unconditionally and wholeheartedly, even if Mau "took their pulse" sometimes, with his teeth - when he still had some... It's unheard of that you don't love Mau or that you don't do what he wants. He talks to you in his very own, unique way, knows what's in the fridge, cupboards, knows the bottle of kitten milk the moment he lays eyes on it, he purrs and says "mau" at the same time, making you understand that he does want what you're holding - if he likes what he sees. If you sit, Mau fits, he's the first to take his place in your lap. If you want to get up, you have a problem - because he never wants that and growls like a grumpy little guy whom you have upset by taking away his favorite toy... If he doesn't want a dog to enter the hall, he just sits on the doorstep and keeps them away. If you take him inside the house, he comes out the window and resumes his place, annoyed by your absolutely useless actions.

Mau is Mau... When he is badly bored, he climbs on the roof and watches us from there. He even guarded a bunch of kittens who managed to escape, around 2 years ago; he helps us with the things we do and accompanies us when we stop to catch our breath - he usually finds a place nearby and sleeps peacefully.

We believe it was in our destiny to meet him and learn from him. He had already been though a lot when we met him: a "bad" leg, scars from street fights... We cared for him the best we could and we never gave him up. Nor did he give up on us. He received multiple treatments, his teeth have been removed one by one as years passed by but... Mau remained. He became a very handsome guy and he was fully aware of that - there was an immense pride in his walk while inspecting his "estate", as if saying: "I am Mau, and I will not give up. I am here to stay!" He had his bad days when he wouldn't eat anything and his good days when you just couldn't give him enough - and these are his and our best, happiest days. Like now ... Although ill, this time worse than usual, Mau WANTS - especially milk, goodies and love. And if Mau wants, Mau gets everything he wishes for. The diagnosis is ... "ugly": kidney failure, liver and heart problems. And his age doesn't help him at all. Yet Mau WANTS! He is active, he's a good guy while getting his intravenous perfusion - as long as he wants, of course; he eats, drinks much milk, he stresses out his vet by following her around, he purrs, growls ... He hasn't changed at all, and he will not give up! We're wondering... maybe he understood us when we begged him to live forever...

Mau has taught us what it means to really want something and to hang on even when you cannot hang on anymore; what it means to remain unchanged, even when you have problems; what honesty is, even if you growl and bite occasionally; what it means to love life ... We are extremely grateful for having the honor of knowing Mau!
Mau is in good hands, gets the best care possible and none of us has lost hope of still having him by our side for a long time to come. We just wanted you all to meet our one and only, extraordinary Mau, at least now. Because Mau is a cat whom you have never ever seen in an adoption an, because Mau is our soul and the soul of the shelter ...
